Restaurant da Pode
San Gimignano, Siena

The restaurant

Right next door to Hotel Sovestro, overlooking a sweeping valley of cypresses, vineyards and olive groves - their beauty singular in every season - is Da Pode, San Gimignano’s legendary restaurant. So great has its success been over the years that the hotel was originally built to accommodate returning patrons, some driving long distances to eat Da Pode’s immaculate Tuscan fare. The setting here is magical both in summer and winter: from the sun-soaked summer terrace to the warmth of the fireplace at the old farmhouse in which the restaurant was originally born, opened by current owner Sergio, his wife Lucia and his late father Alfredo “Pode” Failli in 1985. The skilfully renovated interior bears Da Pode’s fundamental ethos of preserving both family roots and rural traditions with exposed beams, terracotta floors and stones walls on which old farm implements are displayed as symbols of our heritage. Closed on Thursday.

Family, traditions and cuisine

What is the secret of Da Pode? Many have asked over the decades. The answer is simple: it lies in the strength and continuity of our family, our tireless dedication to our restaurant and the pride we take in our work. We can always be found “on the front line” - Lucia and Alessia in the kitchen, Sergio and Barbara front of house. We have never forgotten the humble way in which Da Pode was born (see our story below). The rural traditions of the original dishes have forever remained our reference point even if we have refreshed them for the times. The Failli’s culinary legacy, began by Alfredo (“Pode”), Sergio and Lucia and passed on to daughters Alessia and Barbara, is not only in our in family recipes - turned out with unwavering standards and consistency - but in our warmth, sincerity and personality. At Da Pode, we hope that you will feel that our home is also your home.

The products and the Sovestro Estate

The freshest and highest quality ingredients grown in local soils are the all-important foundation of Da Pode’s dishes. Only a few metres away are the vineyards and olive groves of Tenuta Sovestro which we cultivate to ensure the calibre of our house wines, liqueurs and olive oil. At the centre of the estate is our B&B, an old Tuscan farmhouse renovated in 2021, with elegant rooms some of which have views of the towers of San Gimignano.
